UNL Art Students "Makeover" CEDARS Room
Sandra Williams, a UNL art instructor, tasked her students this semester with a challenge...to do a "makeover" on a room in a community agency utilizing the art concepts they would be learning in her Visual Literacy class. Ms. Williams checked out several CEDARS sites, took pictures of each and reviewed them with her class along with explanations about the purpose of the rooms and the effects the makeover would have on the occupants. The class chose to work on a large room at CEDARS TLC, which serves as a meeting room, TV room and visitation room.
Students then divided into five teams to plan how they would each remove barriers, make the space functional, include colors and designs to make it appropriate and comfortable for the occupants as well as stay within their budget. Once the plans were developed, Ms. Williams held a "critique" where each team presented their makeover concept to the instructor, an interior designer, Kris Strand (TLC Program Manager) and Peg Sneller-Hamilton (CEDARS Service Area Manager). Each team had something that was unique so those elements were all combined to come up with the desired outcome. The class's final exam was to to incorporate perspective drawing, paraline drawing, elevation views, section views and plan drawings to communicate design.
The result---a room reflecting harmonious colors, an "art wall", functional storage space, a built-in TV corner and an original room divider---all of which provided a comfortable and pleasurable living environment for the TLC residents and staff.
TLC loves their new room...thanks to Ms. Williams and the Visual Literacy class!
